United States - December 12, 2024 CAPE HATTERAS, NC - The U.S. Coast Guard sprang into action Thursday, December 12, rescuing three mariners 154 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras after their situation turned critical. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City hoisted the mariners to safety from the sailing vessel TIME-AUT. Initially reporting no distress, the mariners later signaled their need to abandon ship early Thursday morning. Coast Guard watchstanders quickly directed the launch of an HC-130 Hercules airplane, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, and the Coast Guard Cutter Richard Snyder to respond. The rescue highlights the Coast Guard's swift coordination and readiness to protect lives at sea.
