Local news coverage
Four homes were damaged and five people were displaced in Monday night’s two-alarm fire in the 1000 block of Arch Street.
Based on witness accounts, the fire is believed to have started at about 8 p.m. in the second floor of 1031-1033 Arch St., a converted double owned by Dawn and Jamie Roadarmel, according to township Fire Chief Russ Feese.
According to Command (Chief Feese), emergency medical technicians transported Dawn and Jamie Roadarmel from the fire scene to a burn center. Feese said the fire jumped from 1031-1033 Arch St. to 1035 Arch St., a rowhome owned by Paulette Yocum, who recently moved across the street.
Feese said Yocum’s property and 1037 Arch St., occupied by Jonathan Williams and Stephen and Cheryl Fegley, sustained fire, smoke and water damage while 1039 Arch St., believed to be owned by Joseph Toker, had smoke damage.
Firefighters from Coal Township and neighboring communities battled the flames for several hours, using several hose lines and ladder trucks from Shamokin and Overlook to gain the upper hand.
Feese said firefighters had difficulty reaching flames inside the attic of 1031-1033 Arch St. At one point, crews were told to evacuate the building and rear second-story roof due to the conditions.
Feese said numerous master streams, a high-volume water delivery system, were used to knock flames that had breached the roof.
The fire was mostly out by 10:40 p.m. Firefighters reentered the structure and began looking for hot spots. Some crews remained at the scene until about 2:30 a.m.
