STORYLINE:
The 6th edition of the Maasai Olympics took place Saturday at the Kimana Sanctuary in Kenya's Amboseli National Park.
Participants from four major Manyattas (villages) displayed their talents in various athletic competitions including javelin throwing, rungu throwing, and the unique Maasai high jump.
The biennial event not only honors Maasai traditions but also fosters a sense of community and competition among warriors from across the ecosystem.
Samuel Kaanki, coordinator of the Maasai Olympics, explains that the games were created to reshape the cultural practices of the Maasai community, shifting its focus from lion hunting to wildlife conservation.

"We try to change their mind. Instead of killing lions, to protect lions and conserve lions. So the main objective of this program is to change the warriors' mindset from lion hunting to their conservation."
The impact of the Maasai Olympics extends beyond wildlife conservation. Many young warriors have participated in international events such as the New York Marathon, and some have completed their high school educations with financial support from the program.
