STORYLINE:
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan discussed Saturday the latest developments in Gaza and Syria, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement.
The meeting reviewed both sides' efforts to reach a ceasefire and facilitate the exchange of captives in the Hamas-Israel conflict. Al-Sisi emphasized the urgency of delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, particularly as winter approaches.
The two sides also discussed the implementation and maintenance of the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon as a key element in regional efforts for calm.
On Syria, al-Sisi underscored the importance of preserving Syria's unity, territorial integrity, and the security of its people.
Sullivan, who is on a regional tour, visited Israel on Wednesday with Syria on top of the agenda, according to the U.S. administration spokesperson.
On Thursday, Sullivan said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared prepared to negotiate a ceasefire and hostage-release deal in Gaza.
He said he would travel onward to Qatar and Egypt, both mediators between Israel and Hamas, to advance the talks.
