A Hindu temple was reopened after 46 years in a Muslim-dominated area.

The Sambhal administration launched a campaign against encroachment and electricity theft by the rival religion in Uttar Pradesh, India, on December 14.

This prompted police to crack down on houses involved in illegal activities, such as unauthorised electricity connections.

During the operation, authorities discovered a Hindu temple dedicated to Deity Shiva. The temple, once belonging to a Hindu family, had been closed since 1978 following riots.

Idols of Hanuman, a Shivling, Nandi, and Kartikeya were also found in the temple.

Locals reportedly gathered outside the premises and shouted 'Jai Hanuman', which means 'Hail Lord Hanuman'.

Local media reported that a well was also uncovered during the excavation near the temple and that officials are now working to restore the worship site.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shrish Chandra stated that the operation aims to restore public spaces and ensure the smooth flow of the drainage system.

The operation also uncovered a stockpile of gas cylinders from one household and 130 kilowatts of stolen electricity from another in the area.

The Bhasma Shankar temple has now been reopened by the administration. This initiative has encouraged locals to reconnect with their heritage as part of broader efforts to restore order in Sambhal.
