A makeshift grandstand collapsed and injured five residents at a buffalo fighting match in Indonesia.

The seating area made from bamboo poles and canvas roof subsided from the weight of hundreds of locals who attended the event in South Sulawesi on December 14.

Footage shows the tent-like structure tilting as the spectators raced to jump off before its platform broke.

Most of the residents could not flee on time and were buried under the debris.

Five of them were hurt, one of whom fainted and had to be carried across rice fields to be taken to a clinic.

One of the spectators, Isenia, said: 'We were enjoying watching when the seats collapsed. No one died but some were hurt.'

The buffalo fighting continued after that, but instead of a raised grandstand, spectators watched on other tents built on the side of the ring.

Buffalo fighting is a tradition in North Toraja, South Sulawesi, and is held during funerals. It shows respect for the deceased and symbolizes wealth and honour.
