Tourists battled through floods on Thailand's Death Island following days of continuous heavy rainfall.

Relentless downpours over three days starting from December 13 caused severe flooding on Koh Tao as floodwaters cascaded down from the mountains, inundating the community below.

Footage shows tourists and locals helping a stranded mini lorry as it struggled through the deluge on December 14.

Other vehicles were forced to navigate the flood, with locals wading through rising waters. Residences and shops were submerged, causing significant damage.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warned that a low-pressure system, moving from the lower South and Malaysia towards the Andaman Sea from December 13 to 15, would bring additional rain, with isolated heavy showers.

Strong winds are expected to raise Gulf waves to 6.6–9.8ft (2–3 metres), with waves exceeding 9.8ft (3 metres) during thundershowers.

Residents in the south are advised to be cautious of flash floods, especially near waterways, foothills, and low-lying areas.

Koh Tao was dubbed Death Island following the murders of British backpackers Hannah Witheridge and David Miller in 2014. Previous cases of tourist deaths emerged and there have been a number of unexplained deaths of tourists since.

Authors, documentary makers and researchers believe that corrupt Thai police and a powerful clique of local families that control the island are suppressing evidence in order to cover up the murders.
