STORYLINE:
On Sunday, children returned to classrooms in the Syrian capital of Damascus for the first time since the ouster of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Around 9 a.m., students in both civilian attire and school uniforms made their way to local schools.
Universities also reopened their doors, with some administrative staff and professors returning to their offices. The limited resumption of classes and academic work marks a significant step toward normalcy in a city still adjusting to dramatic changes in its political and social landscape.
Syria's interim authorities announced on Thursday last week that all public and private educational institutions would resume classes on Sunday.
In a statement released by the prime minister's office, the interim government emphasized that educational institutions are fully prepared to ensure the continuation of the academic process.
