On Saturday, about 80 Chinese language teachers began a two-day workshop in Tanzania at the University of Dar es Salaam's Confucius Institute. The event aimed to improve Chinese language knowledge and teaching skills.
The workshop attracted teachers from China as well as Tanzanian teachers from the Confucius Institute at the University of Dar es Salaam, the Confucius Institute at the University of Dodoma, the Confucius Classroom at the State University of Zanzibar, the Tanzania Institute of Education, the SAY Foundation in Zanzibar, and from primary and secondary schools across the East African country.
Aldin Mutembei, the Tanzanian director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Dar es Salaam, said that the workshop provides a unique opportunity to enhance professional knowledge and skills that enrich student learning experiences.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): ALDIN MUTEMBEI, Tanzanian director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Dar es Salaam
"Teaching Chinese language in Tanzania and across Africa in general has gained increasing importance due to the deepening diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between China and the African continent. Language is a key tool for fostering mutual understanding. And by learning Mandarin, Tanzanians and other Africans gain a deep understanding of Chinese culture, history, and worldview, which is essential for enhancing cultural diplomacy and fostering the friendly relationship between China and Tanzania and Africa at large."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): HOU BEIBEI, Chinese teacher
"I have been teaching Chinese here for more than one year. From the workshop, I want to enhance my teaching skills and make some communications with my colleagues and some other excellent Chinese teachers, and then can improve my teaching ability."
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): NEEMA MWAMPASHIE, Tanzanian Chinese language teacher
"I am a Chinese teacher from Arusha Secondary School. For the past three years, I have taught almost 100 students the Chinese language. My expectation is (that) I will get more skills on how I can improve my teaching skills to teach students so that they can understand the Chinese language well."
