An Indian actor was arrested after a fan died in a stampede outside the screening of his movie.

Allu Arjun, who played the titular role in Pushpa 2, attended a premiere event at Sandhya Theatre in Hyderabad on December 4 with supporters clamouring to see him.

But as the Bollywood star arrived, the massive crowd pushed through the main gate, causing it to collapse and killing one of the attendees, Revathi, 39, prompting an investigation. Her son was also left in critical condition and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Footage shows Allu being escorted by police out of his home. He was hauled into a car and was taken to Chanchalguda Central Jail.

After 14 days of detention, the Telangana High Court granted his appeal for bail on December 13.

The actor said: 'This forward-thinking decision demonstrates your steadfast commitment to the growth and prosperity of the Telugu film industry.'

Aside from Allu, his security personnel and the theatre's administration are also facing allegations of neglect and homicide.

Authorities said they were not informed that the actor would attend the event.

Allu promised to give Revathi's family 2.5 million INR (around 23,250 GBP) after offering his condolences. He also pledged to cover the son's medical bills.

Fans of the actor protested following his arrest, claiming his innocence.

Following the stampede, the Andhra Pradesh government allowed the request of local theatres to increase ticket prices.

'Pushpa 2' is the sequel to the 2021 Bollywood hit film 'Pushpa: The Rise'. It continues the story of Pushpa Raj, a smuggler played by Allu Arjun, as he faces new challenges and rivals.
