This is the amusing moment a schoolboy was woken up by his family for his birthday surprise but he was too sleepy to blow out his candles.

Gede Diego, 11, was already tucked in bed, but his parents and siblings waited for midnight to greet him in Bali, Indonesia, on December 9.

Footage shows Gede being fetched by his father from the bedroom and carried to the living room sofa.

He looked confused as they put a party hat on him and sang him a song with a candle-lit cake.

Relative Kadek Ari Yudhana said: 'He goes to bed early, but we wanted to mark the celebration at exactly 12 am.'

The youngster had to be given instructions as he appeared unsure what to do.

Gede eventually blew out the candles, and his father carried him back to the bedroom.
