Ski resort carbon monoxide poisoning leaves 12 dead in Georgia
A suspected carbon monoxide leak killed at least 12 people at a ski resort in Georgia.
Eleven workers and one local reportedly died after inhaling the gas at the Indian restaurant 'Haveli' in Gudauri on December 14.
Police said that the bodies of the victims were discovered in a sleeping area above the eatery at the resort.
The Indian nationals are believed to be from Punjab and moved to the resort for work.
Sameer Kumar, a resident of Khanna city, has been identified as one of the 11 deceased.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs said: 'Preliminary tests do not indicate any trace of violence on the bodies.
'A power generator was placed in an indoor area and turned on, probably after the power supply was turned off.'
Local media reported that forensic experts are gathering evidence to determine if the victims' deaths amount to 'negligent manslaughter'.
The Indian embassy in Tbilisi said: 'The Embassy is working closely with local authorities to facilitate the prompt repatriation of the mortal remains to India. We are also in contact with the bereaved families and are committed to providing all possible support.'
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that comes from the incomplete combustion of fuels that contain carbon. It can be found in vehicles, generators, gas stoves, gas space heaters and more.
John Hopkins Medicine said 'CO poisoning is life-threatening. It can cause death. Brain damage can also result if the brain is without oxygen for too long.'
