Drone sightings surge - Activity over military base elsewhere on US East coast
More drones have been sighted elsewhere on the US East coast - among a surge in reports of mysterious flying objects.
The devices have sparked huge speculation and concern across the USA - particularly in New Jersey - with little explanation from authorities, it's been reported.
Now a man has reported seeing drones over Joint Base Cape Cod - a military base in Massachusetts - on multiple occassions.
Shaymus Smith, 54, a project manager from Cotuit, Massachusetts - who lives just eight miles from the base
- said he saw unusual lights and drones in the skies on Friday and Saturday.
With similar sightings reported across the United States in recent weeks, Shaymus's account adds to a growing mystery that has captivated communities.
"Friday night I got home from work and was taking my dogs out and noticed that extremely unusual bright light on the southern horizon," Shaymus said. "
"I kind of watched it for a little bit. It was out of the ordinary, and I know my backyard and sky. It was definitely out of place."
The peculiar light immediately stood out to Shaymus, prompting him to observe it more closely.
"I started watching it for a while and was just caught off guard by not only the location but the intensity of the light," he explained. "
"Then I decided to film it, just saying, ‘Man, that's really weird.' My wife was home with me, and I asked her to come out and take a look at it as well. She concurred that it was unusual."
The strange sighting wasn't an isolated event. "It happened Friday night, and then Saturday night I saw them again — same light, same position," Shaymus said. "
"Usually, about 20 to 25 minutes as it's getting a little bit darker, that's when the drone activity was noticeable as well."
Shaymus recounts observing a specific drone that evening.
"With that particular evening, I'd say 20 to 25 minutes after watching that bright light, my wife and I noticed and observed that drone. "
"It was heading from south to east, towards the east, down Cape."
The direction of the drone's path seemed to align with other local reports.
"I think that correlates with what a woman had seen in Osterville, Massachusetts, which is maybe five miles from me. "
"And then there were also sightings down in Harwich, Massachusetts, which is further down Cape East and the direction that drone was heading. "
"So it kind of all makes sense."
While the bright light remained striking, Shaymus says the drone activity was even more noticeable the following evening.
"Friday night I noticed a lot of activity as well — a lot higher elevation. It wasn't as low as that particular one was, but I'd say I observed at least a half a dozen of them. "
"But they were really high in elevation compared to Friday night."
The sightings seemed to pause temporarily. "Last night I wasn't able to see anything. It was cloudy and overcast, and there wasn't very good visibility," he said."
As for whether the lights and drones are linked to Joint Base Cape Cod, Shaymus remains uncertain.
"I can't say that it was related to the air base. I have no idea. It's a possibility, I guess, but I really can't confirm that. No idea."
The unexplained aerial phenomena have sparked intrigue among locals and beyond.
"I would hope our government would provide some type of transparency, but they may have a reason for not doing so," Shaymus said. "
"Or they might not know what it is either. So, God willing, it's nothing. It seems like a lot of people are intrigued about it, rightly so. "
"I mean, it is unusual and odd. It's bizarre."
According to reports, officials from the FBI, Pentagon, FAA and other agencies claim the drones are not a threat.
But others reports include experts warning the drone sightings could be intelligence gathering by Iran or Russia.
