United States - December 17, 2024 Mesa Verde National Park, CO – A red-tailed hawk that had been recovering from injuries has returned to the wild, thanks to the collaborative efforts of wildlife rehabilitators and medical staff. The hawk, which flew into a car in early November, was initially treated for soft tissue damage and minor head trauma by Dr. Haag at Durango Animal Hospital. After its condition stabilized, it was transferred to Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Frisco Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Del Norte for further care. During its month-long recovery, the hawk shared a flight cage with a golden eagle, regaining strength and stamina. By December 12, it was ready for release, soaring beautifully into the skies above Mesa Verde National Park. The successful rehab and release were made possible by the combined efforts of the National Park Service, Durango Animal Hospital, and CPW staff, marking another victory for wildlife rehabilitation.
