Catarroja, Spain - December 16, 2024 Firefighters have successfully extinguished a blaze that erupted at a makeshift dump site in Catarroja, where vehicles damaged by the recent gota fría storm had been gathered. The fire broke out on the evening of December 16, around 7:15 PM, on a plot of land next to Vila Carmen. Emergency crews from the provincial fire consortium, Valencia City Fire Department, and local and regional police rushed to the scene to control the flames. Firefighters were supported by machinery and even called in the UME (Military Emergency Unit) as the fire spread. This is the second such incident in recent weeks. Just days earlier, a similar fire ignited in Alberic (Ribera Alta) in a designated area for storm debris. The Valencian Agency for Security and Emergency Response has issued safety recommendations for nearby residential areas, given the hazardous nature of the materials stored at these sites. The incident underscores the ongoing risks posed by the aftermath of the gota fría storm.
