Berlin, Germany - September 25, 2024 Video: Act of the 70th birthday of former Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel Friedrich Merz will be the joint candidate for chancellor of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU). The executive committees of the two sister parties are expected to reach a formal agreement early next week. Merz will then be the candidate and possible opponent of the current chancellor, Olaf Scholz, in the upcoming federal election. The leaders of the CDU and CSU, Merz himself and Markus Söder, made a joint statement. Merz mentioned two policy areas relevant to him. Firstly, the immigration issue "remains an important issue. It would be my wish that it would not become the main issue of the 2025 federal election campaign." Merz said that the CDU/CSU "has also put pressure on the federal government to make one or two decisions."
