A ferry capsized when it was struck by a navy speedboat, killing at least 13 passengers in Mumbai, India, today.

The boat was travelling to Elephanta Island with more than 100 tourists onboard - including at least 20 children- when the out-of-control military vessel circled it before crashing into it.

Officials said the ferry, named Neelkamal, overturned and plunged those onboard into the water near the Gateway of India.

Police believe the naval boat had been undergoing tests when the engine jammed and went full throttle before ramming the ferry.

Maharastra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said: 'We received reports of an accident involving the boat Nilkamal, which was heading towards Elephanta. Boats from the Navy, Coast Guard, Port and Police teams were immediately dispatched for assistance.

'We are in constant touch with the district and police administration and fortunately, most of the citizens have been rescued. However, rescue operations are still underway.

'Orders have been given to the district administration to deploy all the necessary machinery for the rescue operation.'
