Private jet crashes into building killing two onboard in Argentina
A private jet overshot the runway before crashing into homes and bursting into flames, killing the pilot and co-pilot.
The Bombardier Challenger 300 was trying to land at the airstrip in San Fernando, Argentina, on Wednesday afternoon.
CCTV shows how the pilot continued to the end of the runway and was unable to stop before attempting to take off again, only to crash into nearby homes.
Police and firemen extinguished the blaze but pilot Martin Fernandez Loza, 46, and his colleague Agustin Orforte, 35, were pronounced dead following the crash at the San Fernando International Airport north of Buenos Aires.
A pensioner, 73, from one of the nearby properties was taken to hospital with injuries. Three cars that were parked in the area also caught fire and a pet cat and dog inside one of the homes were killed.
Police said the aircraft, registered LV-GOK, belonged to the family of Jorge Brito, president of River Plate football club. He was not on board at the time.
One resident who heard the crash said: 'We are just one avenue away from the airport. We can see through the window that the plane went off track and exploded. And we saw with the business cameras that it did not brake, it continued straight and crashed into the fence.'
Another told local media she fled her house to escape the impact.
She said: 'We thought we were going to die. It was a very ugly scene. What hurts me is that I lost my daughter's things. I was with her and my sister, we got out of there in a hurry. If my brother hadn't broken the fence, we wouldn't have escaped.
'We were sitting with my grandmother. We were laughing. We saw the plane coming at full speed. We heard it. We were in the yard, and we saw it coming from behind the bars. It was coming straight at us. We started running to the back. If we didn't break the fence, we would have died there with the plane.'
A neighbour in the area said that the family living in the house was saved because they were not there at the time of the crash.
She said: 'They told me that people were eating downstairs, and that's why they were able to get out. A dog and a cat were left inside the house and couldn't get out. You could hear them crying.'
Officials said that a contingency cordon was set up at the scene with more than 50 firefighters, Buenos Aires Police, Civil Defense, Health and Safety personnel, as well as Airport Security Police and personnel from the Municipality of San Fernando.
