US: Two Killed in Plane Crash Near Honolulu Airport, Flames Erupt After Hard Turn
Honolulu, United States - December 17, 2024 A small Kamaka Airlines plane crashed into a building near Honolulu International Airport on Tuesday afternoon, killing two people and sending a plume of flames and black smoke into the sky. Ken Schmidt, who recorded dashcam footage of the incident, described the moment the aircraft appeared in a hard left bank just above the industrial area near the Airport Viaduct on H-1 westbound. “I thought it looked strange as it was so low and such a hard bank,” Schmidt said. Moments later, he captured the fiery crash. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi confirmed the victims were employees of Kamaka Air. “I am deeply saddened by the tragic plane crash on Oahu this afternoon,” he stated, offering condolences to their families and praising first responders for their swift action. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green also expressed his grief, confirming that the aircraft struck an unoccupied building on Ualena Street around 3:20 p.m. local time. He reassured residents that airport operations remain unaffected, though surrounding roads were temporarily closed. The Honolulu Emergency Operations Center was partially activated, and streets in the area have since reopened, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation. Federal officials are investigating the cause of the crash, which remains unknown. “This heartbreaking incident reminds us of the risks taken by those who keep Hawai‘i’s essential goods moving,” Mayor Blangiardi said.
