STORYLINE:

At least 2 people have been confirmed dead and 31 others were injured after a passenger train crashed into a freight train in the Murmansk region on Wednesday, TASS reported.

The injured include five children. To date, a total of 14 people have been hospitalized, four of whom are in serious condition.

The incident occurred at 4:15 p.m. local time (1315 GMT) Wednesday when the passenger train, en route from Murmansk to St. Petersburg, collided with freight train wagons at Knyazhaya station.
   
The passenger train was carrying 326 people at the time of the collision.

According to preliminary investigation, the accident was caused by improper operation of the freight train driver and his assistant, both of whom have been arrested.
