Los Angeles, United States - December 19, 2024 12/19/2024 02:30 am (GMT-0800) LOS ANGELES – A procession was held for Signal Hill Police Chief Wayne Byerley, who passed away on Wednesday. The procession route, lined with personnel from the Los Angeles Police Department, California Highway Patrol, Los Angeles Fire Department, and the Anaheim and Signal Hill Police Departments, ended at the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office in the 1100 block of Mission Road in Los Angeles. According to the City of Signal Hill press release, Byerley passed away after experiencing a medical emergency while working Wednesday evening. Byerley served as a captain for the Los Alamitos Police Department and honorably retired from the Orange County Sheriff's Department as a Division Commander after 32 years of service before serving as the Chief of Police for the Signal Hill PD since May 22, 2023, according to the press release. He is survived by his wife and 15-year-old son, as well as many family members. Mayor Keir Jones shared the following statement, “Chief Wayne Byerley’s leadership, optimism, and unwavering dedication to our community will leave a lasting legacy in Signal Hill. We are deeply grateful for his service and profoundly saddened by his loss."
