Red pandas receive carrot tinsel and bamboo bread for Christmas treat
Red pandas received carrot tinsel, bamboo bread, and pear rings as special Christmas treats this holiday season.
Adorable footage shows the animals enjoying their early festive feast at the Vienna Zoo on Thursday, December 19.
The zookeepers treated the climbing enthusiasts to a Christmas tree decorated with sweet treats they rarely enjoy.
Zoo director Dr. Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck said: 'We usually only give pears as a grated ingredient in bamboo bread, so the pear rings were a special highlight for them.'
The red pandas, known for their love of sweet fruit, were thrilled by the festive gift.
Since November, the red pandas have been settling into a much larger enclosure next to the rainforest house, sharing their space with small-clawed otters.
Although they live together, the two species have different lifestyles. The red pandas like the trees, while the otters stay on the ground and in the water.
The zoo director added: 'Although they live in different habitats, their natural ranges in Southeast Asia partially overlap.
'Both species are also sadly endangered or critically endangered in the wild.'
The holiday tree, however, was reserved just for the red pandas, making it a joyful occasion in their new home at the zoo.
