A suspected thief dubbed the Porch Pirate, was seen allegedly stealing a package from a doorstep in New Orleans.

The suspect appeared to take the parcel from 5712 Wilton Avenue on Tuesday, December 17, around 3:22 pm.

Footage shows the man, said to live in the area, casually walking up to the home and taking the delivery in broad daylight.

This case is said to be just one incident of 'porch piracy', with criminals stealing an estimated 12 billion dollars worth of goods from doorsteps over the past year.

In a similar case, Illinois resident Don Archer said his doorbell camera recorded a thief grabbing his package and quickly leaving. The footage later helped authorities make an arrest.

Police have urged homeowners to stay alert and invest in security cameras or consider alternative delivery options to protect their parcels from thieves.
