New York, United States - December 19, 2024 United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres on Thursday called on the international community to support Syria in achieving long-sought peace and stability. Speaking at a press encounter at UN headquarters in New York, Guterres said the people of Syria stand at a moment of history, as well as a moment of opportunity. The political transition in the country must be led by Syrians, and for all Syrians, said the UN chief, adding that the process must be inclusive, credible and peaceful, and all communities must be fully integrated. The process must be guided by the underlying principles of Security Council resolution 2254, and the international community has an obligation to stand with the Syrian people to provide support, said Guterres. Noting that Syria remains one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world, Guterres said the UN will assess the situation in Syria and advance aid efforts. The UN chief expressed deep concern over the situation in northern Syria, saying that extremist groups continue to pose a significant threat to the country. He also condemned the Israeli airstrikes on Syria, describing them as violations of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and urged an immediate halt to such actions. He called on both Israel and Syria to uphold the terms of the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement.
