A truck carrying chemicals crashed and burst into flames killing at least five people and injuring dozens more in India on Friday morning.

The vehicle lost control and smashed into cars on the Jaipur-Ajmer highway in the Bhankrota area of Rajasthan shortly after 6 am local time.

Witnesses said the lorry exploded before it was engulfed in fire. More than 30 surrounding cars and trucks were also dragged into the blaze.

Police said that at least five road users had been burned alive at the scene while more than 40 others were injured.

Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph said: 'Five people have died and 37 are injured.'

The officer said that more than 25 ambulances reached the spot and took the victims to the hospital. The road was closed to traffic.

Fire chief Manish Gupta added: 'It was very difficult to control the fire. Fire brigade teams were not able to reach the burning vehicles.

'There were three petrol pumps in the affected area but fortunately, they are safe.'
