Controversy as tourist hotspot in China uses cotton and white sand to create 'snowy' scenery
Recently, in Baquan Scenic Area, Xinxiang, Henan, tourists discovered that the so-called "snow scenery" was not real snow but was created using materials like cotton and white sand. Many visitors expressed feeling misled.
In response, the scenic area explained that due to the recent warm temperatures, it was unable to produce real snow. Instead, they used "film set design" techniques to create a snow village scene in the style of Altay using cotton and white sand, intended for photo opportunities. The scenic area emphasised that this measure was taken to meet visitors' expectations for snowy landscapes and stated they plan to produce real snow once temperatures drop.
The management also acknowledged potential shortcomings in their promotional efforts and committed to making improvements. The Xinxiang Tourism Bureau has received feedback from visitors and is working with the scenic area to expedite the creation of authentic snow scenery. They also urged the scenic area to ensure truthful and accurate communication in their promotional materials.
