A lion cub was rescued after falling into a well in India.

Footage shows the one-year-old Asiatic lion, Bal Singh, stranded at the bottom of the water source in Lodhva village, Sutrapada taluka, Gujarat, on Tuesday, December 17.

The incident occurred around 4 am when the young animal fell onto Ramesh Dana's farm in Chudasma.

A farmer drawing water noticed Bal Singh and quickly alerted the authorities. Locals reported that a group of four lions was also seen nearby.

Rescue teams from the Amrapur Animal Care Centre used specialised equipment and a rope to safely pull the cub from the depths. The operation lasted three hours.

After being examined by authorities, it was confirmed that Bal Singh is in stable condition but will continue to be monitored.

The population of Asiatic lions in the Gir forests of Gujarat has grown from 523 in 2015 to 674 in 2020, as revealed in a report released by the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change.

The Gujarat tourism website states that the lion population was less than 200 in the late 1960s. A total of 239 lions, including 126 cubs, died in Gujarat in the last two years, with 29 of these fatalities being due to unnatural causes, as reported by Forest Minister Mulubhai Bera in the state assembly earlier this year.
