Worshippers were injured during a stampede at a religious festival in India.

Dramatic footage shows devotees pushing and shoving uncontrollably, causing many to fall in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday, December 20, around 1 pm.

Authorities reported that thousands had gathered to listen to a recital of the 'Shiv Mahapuran Katha' by religious leader Pradip Mishra on the sixth day of the event when the chaos erupted.

The incident occurred when several women and elderly attendees attempted to enter the pandal and scuffled with bouncers trying to stop them. The situation at the entry gate spiraled out of control, reportedly triggering the commotion.

Police were quickly deployed to the area.

Local media reported that at least four women were injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Shiv Mahapuran Katha is a spiritual recitation of the ancient Hindu text, the Shiv Mahapuran, which details the stories, teachings, and myths surrounding Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism.
