Germany: Mourners pay respects to victims of Christmas market attack
Magdeburg, Germany - December 22, 2024 Mourners, young and old, continued to lay flowers and light candles on Sunday to pay their respects to the five people who lost their lives and more than 200 others who were injured in a German Christmas market attack on Friday evening. The attack killed five people and injured over 200 others when a car rammed into a large crowd at the Christmas market in the central German city of Magdeburg. Police said the 50-year-old male suspect is facing multiple charges of murder and attempted murder. Erik, another resident, also paid respect for the victims, including a colleague of his mother, who was hit and is now in hospital. A single white rose in his hand. On a visit to the site of the attack on Saturday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the country should stand together and not "allow those who wish to sow hate to do so". On Saturday evening, around a hundred far-right protesters silently marched through the streets of Magdeburg calling for remigration, a euphemism for mass deportation. The suspect, a doctor from Saudi Arabia who had been living in Germany since 2006, was arrested at the scene. His online presence pointed towards a hatred for Islam and support for right wing politics. But the motive for the attack still remains unclear. Magdeburg public prosecutor's has stated that it may have been "dissatisfaction with the treatment of Saudi-Arab refugees", yet Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has said that she can only say with certainty "that the perpetrator was obviously islamophobic". Reports show that authorities had been made aware of the suspect's increasingly anti-Germany discourse, but it was not considered a concrete threat. As the investigation into the attack continues, residents of Magdeburg are doing what they can to salvage what's left of the Christmas spirit. Shotlist: Magdeburg, Germany - Dec 22, 2024: 1.
