This is the stunning moment a meteor lights up the night sky above Girona, Spain.

Breathtaking footage shows a fireball streaking across the horizon over the Gulf of Leon on December 20, around 5:34 am.

Authorities said the meteoroid, traveling at an impressive speed of 85,000 km/h, entered the atmosphere and was visible from several locations, including Sant Celoni and Barcelona.

Despite its relatively lower speed, the meteor's radiant suggests it may have been an Ursid meteor from a disrupted orbit near Earth.

Its luminous trail, caused by ablation, appeared at altitudes between 78 and 44 km above sea level.

Meteors are bits of comets and asteroids. As these objects pass the Sun, they leave a dusty trail. Each year, Earth passes through this debris, causing the bits to burn up in the atmosphere and create fiery streaks in the sky.

Spain is located in the southern part of Europe, with many areas enjoying clear skies and relatively low levels of light pollution, especially in rural regions. This can provide excellent viewing conditions for celestial events like meteor showers.
