Chaos as Shanghai metro train collides with crane on tracks
Around 8 a.m. on December 22, a sudden incident occurred on Shanghai Metro Line 11. A crawler crane from a nearby construction site collapsed, with its boom intruding onto the metro tracks, leading to a collision with a moving train.
The impact caused the train's windows to shatter instantly, scattering glass fragments all over the floor. The train doors were slightly deformed, and the front of the train sustained damage. Passengers were alarmed, but the train operator quickly initiated emergency braking, successfully preventing more severe consequences.
Following the incident, Shanghai Metro immediately activated its emergency response plan, dispatching professional teams to the site for repairs and evacuating affected passengers. Authorities confirmed that there were no casualties. To meet the travel needs of affected passengers, an emergency bus shuttle service was arranged as an alternative transportation option.
After urgent repairs, the damaged section of Line 11 resumed operation at around 9 p.m. that evening.
The Shanghai Emergency Management Bureau has taken the incident very seriously, escalating the investigation into this major safety hazard. A dedicated investigation team will conduct an in-depth analysis of the incident's causes, identify those responsible, and impose strict penalties on the general contractor and subcontractors involved to ensure such incidents do not recur.
