The Sakurajima volcano erupted, sending an ash cloud 3,400 meters above the crater in Japan on December 23.

Officials confirmed that the eruption occurred at 7:10 and 7:29 am on Monday.

Dramatic footage captured the volcano emitting a plume of ash, with birds flying across the foreground in Kagoshima.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said it has been monitoring the situation closely, classifying the volcanic activity as serious but still within Level 3, which restricts access to certain areas.

Authorities warned: 'Residents should be alert for ashfall, especially those living around Sakurajima and Tarumizu.'

This eruption marks the 41st explosive event of the year.

Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes, with a history of frequent eruptions. Originally an island, it became a peninsula after a significant eruption in 1914.
