Wheelchair user wows judges at Para Dance contest in Italy
This is the heartwarming moment a wheelchair user wowed judges at a Para Dance contest in Italy.
Anne Charlaine Santos from the Philippines was diagnosed with Myelo Meningocele, but she said her disability did not stop her from pursuing her love for dancing.
Footage shows the freestyle dance of physically impaired Anne with her partner Filemon Baguio during the Genoa Para Dancesports World Championship. She was seen captivating the dancefloor with graceful moves, even lifted perfectly by her co-dancer.
She said: 'The freestyle itself is hard because I need to portray Harley, there are so many emotions involved, and then the lifts - we practised them several times because my core is weak. I have no sensation in my legs, which makes it difficult for my partner.'
The duo won 4th place out of 30 countries.
Para dancing, also known as Para Dance Sport, is a sport for people with physical disabilities, where athletes perform partner dances in wheelchairs or with other mobility aids. It includes various dance styles, such as Latin and ballroom, adapted for different levels of mobility and skill.
The sport began in Sweden in the late 1970s and has grown in popularity worldwide, with competitive events held internationally, such as the Para Dance World Championships.
Myelo Meningocele is a type of spina bifida, a congenital disability where the spinal cord and its protective covering do not form correctly. This happens when part of the spinal cord and nerves stick out through an opening in the spine, which can cause paralysis in the lower body, depending on how severe it is.
