"We've ditched our Christmas tree for a standing sculpture - we'll never go back"
A family ditched their traditional Christmas tree for a standing sculpture and said they'll never go back.
Alexandria Masse, 24, created what she calls a "Christmas obelisk" - which will replace her family's tree this year. "
Alexandria, a textile artist, made the "obelisk" last year but hated the result and stored it in her parents' guest room for over a year and a half."
When going through her stuff last month, she rediscovered it and decided to transform it into a Christmas tree.
She dyed it green and added some baubles and lights and now it has taken the role of Christmas tree in her family's front room.
Now they are thinking of keeping the "obelisk" and using it for "years to come"."
Alexandria, from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, said: "I think this will definitely become a tradition for my family and we will keep using the tree for years to come."
"We used to get a real tree every year, which I know isn't the best for the environment."
"Now we have a really fun alternative that fits in with our family."
Alexandria spent about a week transforming the sculpture into a Christmas tree, dying the different fabrics and the crochet "skin" green. "
She said: "It makes it look much better."
"I particularly like how the different fabrics in the 'skin', which is made of acrylic, cotton and wool, have picked up the dye in slightly different shades."
Not only is the tree environmentally friendly but it's also low maintenance, which is key for Alexandria's mom.
Alexandria: "My mom is a big fan if for no other reason than she enjoys low maintenance Christmas decorations and this works for that."
