Christmas trees bring joy in Muslim majority Indonesia
Heartwarming footage shows Christmas trees that have brought joy to Muslim-majority Indonesia.
Families gathered to celebrate the Toraja Light Festival and the upcoming Christian celebration at Rantepao Congregation in Toraja Utara, South Sulawesi, on December 23.
Footage shows various flashing, huge Christmas trees displayed in a row on a field.
Local media reported that the decorations were made from recycled materials, which was an idea from the event organisers to reuse items and save costs.
Anugrah Yaya Rundupadang, a member of the Toraja Light Festival committee, said: 'This is the moment for us as humans to become a light not only for ourselves but for all, regardless of ethnicity, race, and religion, so that we can be a blessing and light to our fellow human beings.'
Eventgoers from different religions also visited the area to enjoy the holiday spirit.
Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, with more than 87 per cent of the aligning with Islam. However, the country is a secular state that officially recognises six religions, including Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Confucianism.
Muslims do not celebrate Christmas as they follow the teachings of their prophets. Both the Quran and the Bible provide evidence that Jesus Christ was not born on December 25, leading them to view the event as an ordinary day.
Muslims only celebrate Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the month of fasting, and Eid al-Adha, the 'Festival of Sacrifice,' as the holidays they are required to observe.
