A car crashed into a school killing two and injuring at least 10 others in Thailand.

The vehicle was being driver by retired government worker Somsak Arsaijao, 75, in Nakhon Ratchasima, on Monday afternoon.

CCTV shows the Honda CR-V ploughing into crowds of schoolchildren as they prepared to go home for the day.

Officers said that a four-year-old nursery pupil along with traffic officer Police Lieutenant Wimut Tansupho were both killed.

The other victims - three of them seriously injured - were rushed to hospital for treatment. They included pupils, four parents, and one food vendor.

Officers found Somsak's car flipped over behind a bus stop. They said the driver was pulled from the wreckage and found to be four times over the legal drink driving limit.

Police Lieutenant Phanopong Chuankrathok said the driver was found with 197 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood - more than the legal limit of 50mg.

Major General Narongrit Dansuwan, commander of Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Police, confirmed that he had ordered the maximum charges allowed by law against Somsak.

He said: ‘We interrogated the driver and learned that he had a party with his friends at a restaurant in the city before the incident.

‘After drinking, he drove his car back to his house in the Chaloem Phra Kiat district. He drove at speed but was unaware of what happened when he arrived at the scene.

'The suspect will be charged with causing death and severe injury while driving under the influence of alcohol.'

The punishment is up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to 200,000 baht. For causing severe injury, the sentence is up to six years in prison.

Officers said that the suspect had been discharged from hospital and remanded in custody. Bail had been denied.
