Residents struggled through heavy snowfall that left drivers stranded on the road in northern India.

More than 1,000 vehicles were stuck between Solang and Atal Tunnel amidst extreme weather conditions in Manali, Himachal Pradesh, on December 23.

Tourists and locals were trapped in their cars for hours, with the growing traffic jam prompting authorities to launch an overnight rescue operation to evacuate 700 holidaymakers.

Footage shows traffic control officers assisting travellers with navigating their vehicles on the snowy highway.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave to severe cold wave warning for Himachal Pradesh. According to the IMD, cold wave to severe cold wave conditions is very likely in some parts of Himachal Pradesh from December 23 to 26.
