The world-renowned Velankanni Church in Tamil Nadu is buzzing with activity as thousands of devotees gather to celebrate Christmas
The festivities began with a special midnight mass at 11:30 PM, led by Bishop Sahayaraj of the Thanjavur Diocese, at the Xavier Grounds near the Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health. The ceremony included a sermon and a concelebrated mass in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Konkani, and English.
As part of the celebrations, the Shrine Basilica's Rector, Fr. Irudayaraj, will exhibit the infant Jesus' statue to the devotees, symbolizing the birth of Jesus Christ. The event has drawn huge crowds from various districts of Tamil Nadu, as well as from other states and countries.
Notably, the Velankanni Church is one of the most famous Christian pilgrimage sites in India, and its Christmas celebrations are a major attraction. The church is decorated with beautiful lights and decorations, and the festivities include special prayers, processions, and cultural programs.
To ensure the safety and security of the devotees, tight police security arrangements have been made in and around Velankanni. With over 10,000 people expected to participate in the special prayers at the Xavier Grounds, the authorities are taking all necessary precautions to prevent any untoward incidents
