Tot celebrates first birthday with tomahawk steak
A little girl strayed from tradition and celebrated her first birthday with a steak.
Parents Liberty Bunney, 23, and Rhys Barnden, 22, gave their daughter Sadie Barnden, one, a tomahawk steak instead of a traditional birthday cake.
Before having Sadie, Liberty was a nutrition coach and her and Rhys agreed to wait until Sadie is older before introducing any added sugars.
Sadie had already tried steak and her parents knew she was a fan, so the extra special 40-day dry aged tomahawk felt like a perfect treat.
Liberty, a stay-at-home mum and student from Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia, said: "Sadie really enjoyed the birthday treat."
"Her favourite bit was biting it off the bone! "
"I was an online nutrition coach so health is something I've always been passionate about. "
"I did a lot of research on diets for babies and how important those first years are at laying the foundation for their long term gut health, food preferences, health outcomes, etc."
"She doesn't know what sugar or cake or chocolate is to know that she is missing out on."
"If anything, she actually is a huge veggie girl and will eat vegetables before anything else so a cake probably wouldn't please her anyway."
"We still wanted to do something fun for her birthday to celebrate, so we thought a steak would be the next best thing."
Liberty and Rhys plan to continue this tradition and are thinking of giving Sadie lobster for her second birthday.
Liberty said: "She loved it and it was a bit of fun so we will keep doing it as a birthday dinner tradition."
"Rhys says we will add lobster next year for a full surf and turf. "
"When she is older and asks for cake, she will get a cake too - the best of both worlds."
