This is the terrifying moment a cobra was caught hiding in a family's ceiling in Thailand.

The venomous reptile had slithered under the zinc roofing amid heavy rains in Yala province on December 17.

Homeowner Yoohan Jehuseng, 45, said he had first seen the snake crossing a canal near their home. It re-emerged in the ceiling while he was dismantling their outdoor kitchen.

Footage shows an animal rescue team dragging the cobra out of its hiding place. They managed to grab the aggressive creature using catchphoons. They took its measurements before bagging it inside a sack to be released into the woods.

The officers said the cobra measured 10ft and weighed 11 lbs.

Resident Yoohan said: 'The snake had crossed the canal to the other side. At first, I thought it was returning to the forest, so I was shocked to see it appear inside our house. I was standing there cleaning up the kitchen when it lunged at me from a corner. I was so shocked that I ran away.'

Researchers found that 7,000 people are treated for snake bites each year in Thailand. Suchai Suteparuk from the Division of Toxicology at Chulalongkorn University reported that 30 of those die, with cobras being the biggest killer.
