The Bryant Park fountain froze during a cold snap in New York.

Footage shows the iconic Midtown landmark turning into ice for the first time this year, marking winter on December 23.

Locals and tourists, however, continued to visit the spot covered in thick clothing.

The chilly temperatures that dropped to -10 degrees C followed the Winter Solstice and the city's first snow on December 21.

The Bryant Park Fountain, designed by Charles A Platt, honours Josephine Shaw Lowell, a social reformer known for creating the New York Consumers League in 1890.

The fountain was installed in 1913 as a monument and stood through decades of winter, including a major refurbishing in 1992.
