This is the terrifying moment two heroic pet dogs protect their family home by fighting off a king cobra.

CCTV footage shows the brave canines clashing with the deadly reptile that entered their owner's residence in Pendarakapa village, Mungeli district of Chhattisgarh, India, on December 23.

Reports said the loyal duo killed the venomous snake, but one of the saviours tragically died on the spot from several bites by the serpent. The other is reportedly in critical condition.

The king cobra is a venomous snake species found in Southern and Southeast Asia. It is the world's longest venomous snake, growing an average of 10 to 13ft.

They have potent venom that affects the nervous system, and though they rarely bite humans, their bite can be fatal without prompt medical treatment.

Cobras are also known for their intelligence and complex behaviours. They typically inhabit forests, woodlands, and grasslands.
