Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, 92, passes away in Delhi
Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away at 92 in Delhi.
The veteran Congress leader was reportedly admitted to the emergency department of AIIMS hospital on the evening of December 26.
In a press release late Thursday, AIIMS Delhi said: 'With profound grief, we inform the demise of Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92.
'He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had sudden loss of consciousness at home on 26th December 2024.
'Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the Medical Emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi at 8:06 pm. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 pm.'
Salman Khurshid, a veteran Congress lawmaker, expressed his deepest sympathies to Singh's family.
He said: 'Deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India. His contributions to the nation and his dedication to public service will always be remembered.'
Robert Vadra, the husband of Congresswoman Priyanka Gandhi, also added: 'I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Fmr Prime Minister Manmohan Singh ji. I send his family and loved ones my sincerest sympathies. We appreciate your service to our country.'
Born in Punjab on September 26, 1932, Manmohan Singh obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in economics from Punjab University in 1952 and 1954, respectively.
He furthered his education by earning a degree in Economics from Cambridge University in 1957 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics from Oxford University in 1962.
Singh was the 13th prime minister of India, serving from 2004 to 2014. He was a member of India's Upper House of Parliament and the leader of the opposition from 1998 to 2004.
He was also the country's first prime minister from the Sikh minority.
