Footage shows smoke rising from the end of the runway after a plane carrying 181 passengers crashed in South Korea.

The Boeing 737 overshot the runway and hit a wall, killing at least 62 of those onboard at the Muan International Airport in South Jeolla province.

Emergency crews battled the fire at the aircraft, operated by Jeju Air, while pulling at least three survivors from the cabin.

Flight records show the plane had departed from Bangkok, Thailand, at 2.29 am local time before attempting to land at 8.59am in South Korea on Sunday morning, December 29, in the region also known as Jeonnam.

Lee Jeong-hyun, the chief of Muan Fire Department, said that a bird strike or the bad weather could be the cause of the crash but an investigation is ongoing.
