The Kanlaon Volcano shook with tremors as it spewed ash several times in the Philippines.

The volcano belched gas and ash amid continued seismic unrest on Negros island on Sunday, December 29.

Philippine seismological agency PHIVOLCS reported today that 23 volcanic earthquakes and six ash emissions, each lasting up to 84 minutes, were recorded over 24 hours.

The volcano released 6,559 metric tonnes of sulfur dioxide, producing gas plumes that reached up to 660ft (200m).

Alert Level 3 indicating high levels of volcanic unrest was raised over Kanlaon Volcano.

The 8,100ft stratovolcano, which straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, has been spewing ash and sulfur dioxide at increased rates since it erupted in June.

Its last magmatic eruption was in 1902.

Alert Level 3 remains in effect, indicating that a magmatic eruption has started and could escalate into further explosive eruptions.

Local government units are advised to evacuate within a 6-km radius of the volcano's summit.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
