This is the dramatic moment a boy trapped overnight in a 140ft borewell was rescued in India.

Sumit Meena, 10, had been flying a kite when he plunged into the uncovered hole in Pipliya Village in Madhya Pradesh state at around 5 pm on December 28.

His family, who had been working nearby, searched for the youngster and found him stuck in the borewell.

Footage shows excavators digging up a parallel pit to reach Sumit, who was stuck at a depth of around 39 feet. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were also at the scene pumping oxygen into the well.

Sumit was rescued at 9:30 am on Sunday, December 29. He was rushed to a hospital in Raghogarh but died soon after being admitted.

Guna district chief medical and health officer Dr Rajkumar Rishishwar said: 'The child was in the narrow borewell for the entire night in the chilly weather.

'His hands and feet were drenched and swollen. His clothes were also wet and mud was found in his mouth.'

The borewell lacked casing as it had not yet struck water, authorities said.

Sumit's case is the latest involving borewell accidents in India.

In a similar incident two weeks earlier, a boy, 5, fell into a borewell and died after a 55-hour rescue operation in the Dausa district of Rajasthan state.
