Ship spotters confuse HMS Queen Elizabeth with HMS Somerset off Kent, UK

Ship spotters were left confused after believing HMS Queen Elizabeth visited Kent, UK last night (December 31), but in reality the vessel was HMS Somerset.

Marine tracking websites showed a vessel initially identified as 'British Warship' as heading up the Thames Estuary off Kent.

The ship's identification then briefly changed to HMS Queen Elizabeth, giving the impression it was the Royal Navy aircraft carrier, with the ship then appearing to berth at the Port of Sheerness.

However, as footage filmed last night shows, the vessel was in fact the much smaller HMS Somerset.

Independent website UK Defence Journal noted on X today: "HMS Queen Elizabeth is absolutely not off the Kent coast; she's alongside in her home port of Portmouth".
