A leopard was spotted dragging away a calf on a road in India.

Passersby saw the wild cat biting the neck of the cow in the middle of the dark highway in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, on December 30.

Footage shows the hungry beast holding its hapless prey on the dark road bridge.

Upon seeing the vehicle, the predator carried the hoofed creature to the side of the road.

The filmer said: 'I tried to honk at the leopard to scare it away and save the calf, but it did not leave its prey.'

The leopard population in India has grown from 12,852 in 2018, to 13,874 in 2022, according to the 'Status of Leopards in India 2022' report, released by the Union Environment Ministry on February 29.

The development of homes in and around forests has led to an increase in conflicts with humans.
