Huesca, Spain - December 28, 2024 A busy weekend in the Aragonese Pyrenees saw the Guardia Civil rescue 15 hikers from various accidents, including a Bilbao mountaineer suffering from hypothermia. The 48-year-old hiker was saved on Friday afternoon from Pico de Aspe, where he had become stranded on an icy slope after equipment failure. Rescuers, including a Greim team from Jaca and a Huesca helicopter, rushed to his aid. He showed signs of mild hypothermia. The rescues didn’t stop there. Among the 15 saved were two other Basques—one with a sprained ankle and another with a broken wrist. Other incidents included a 22-year-old Argentine with an ankle sprain and a Barcelona woman who had fallen while skiing. Additionally, a Madrid woman and her 14-year-old child, along with a couple from Castellón, were also rescued. The Guardia Civil emphasized the poor technical preparation of many hikers, who were unready for the extreme conditions, including treacherous ascents and subzero temperatures. On Saturday and Sunday, even more rescues took place, including the evacuation of an injured woman from Cuenca and an Huesca man with severe fractures.
