Sudan: Report reveals dozens of "torture facilities" in Sudan's Khartoum
Sudan - December 19, 2024 Thousands of people are being held in over 50 detention centers across Sudan's Khartoum state, many of which are described as "torture facilities", according to a report by the Sudanese human rights group Emergency Lawyers. The report, titled "Death Detention Centers in Khartoum", documents the existence of at least 44 detention centers affiliated with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and eight operated by the armed forces. The rights group alleges that more than 5,000 people, including 3,500 civilians, are being arbitrarily detained under conditions marked by extreme brutality. In Omdurman, one of the three cities comprising Khartoum state, the scars of the ongoing conflict between the army and the RSF are visible everywhere. A destroyed building that once housed the state's Radio and TV headquarters has been re-purposed by the RSF as a prison and torture center, survivors said. Ahmed Atta -- a victim who is old and disabled -- still remembers the day he was blindfolded and brought here for interrogation. Based on survivors' testimonies, many detainees died either as a result of systematic torture, or due to disease that spread within the detention areas. In addition, the victims say they were denied food and medical examination. The activists also claim that detainees are subjected to interrogation under horrific torture such as hanging by the legs, electrocution, and extinguishing cigarette butts. The cruel and degrading treatment also includes forcing detainees to perform hard labor and digging graves for the dead on both sides. Both warring parties have previously denied the allegations, with the RSF saying they only held prisoners of war who were well treated. Shotlist: Khartoum State, Sudan - Dec 19, 2024: 1.
